Its in human nature, that's once you get out of your natural and usual environment and go to a completely different place, experience new things, feel the change, you try to assimilate for good or for bad, you try to be better amongst everyone around you, try to be "cool", by blending in or by standing out; or sometimes you may just be confused as to where exactly do you fit it.
That's where I'm at, not sure where I fit in, America gave me the accent, Pakistan kinda took it away, America made me wear skinny jeans, Pakistan said shalwar kameez, America; hanging out with friends every weekend or just jamming on the guitar for no purpose, Pakistani weekends, if not ruined by excessive load shedding, parents made sure they make plans without asking me, these subtle differences change the way life was different for me, in the three months I was in Pakistan, even the most minor & un-noticeable of things that were going wrong, caught my attention more then ever. An uneven road to a cop who was being bribed, made me think as to why don't things go according to law in Pakistan, why do we have more homeless, unemployed, tired of life depressed people, & why was it being so hard for me to get adjusted at my home country, I mean everything was still the same, the police walaas, the garbage on the side walk, the thailay walaas, except for I had changed, taking 3 showers every day, sleeping at days instead of nights, going around in my Harry Potter tee and pair of raggedy old jeans, eating with a fork, and thinking Indian soaps were lamer then last year ... and when I was being different, no one really cared as to what it was, I was labeled as being "Americanized", and if I showed a slight desire of a better country and environment around me, the first response from people would be,"Yeh tumhara America nahi hai, welcome to Pakistan". Yes thank you very much for telling me that a-hole, but I kinda realized that when I got out of the plane!, sometimes it would get to the point of real annoyance, and I felt like punching the next person who gave me one of their stupid opinions, BUT passive resistance worked, haha, I tried to ignore everyone and continued with my 3 showers a day and sleeping in at days, and wearing that pair o' jeans. My eating habits had changed considerably, except for the fact that I would chug down a glass of water after eating anything, as my poor stomach couldn't hold up with all them spices everyday was a treat with Haleems, samosaas and Pakoraas, "How I miss all that"
The thing that I am tryna say here is maybe that, Pakistanis need to be more accepting of different cultures and people, that may solve part of the crises our country is in right now, everyday we have one of those "We Hate America" or "May Israel burn in Hell" rallies, where the so called turban clad, long bearded preachers of the religion, spread hatred amongst the youth for America, no matter what happens its in our nature to blame it on someone, our schools close down... amreeka kee chaal hai, someone steals your dog... this is a secret conspiracy by America to steal all the dogs" :D. Americans, on the other hand have the same stereotypical concepts about Pakistanis, they also wonder if we grass, gum and cars in Pakistan, but they are very open and understanding nation, once you talk to them, tell them how things are they feel dumb and accept the fact that there are no aliens living on the other side of the world, while Pakistanis are very reluctant to accept change or a different culture. I wanna quote that person who said something like "The people are surprisingly same everywhere, its the government who creates the barriers"
well Amen to that!
